The House As mountain guides, Scott Schell and Margaret Wheeler are used to the upper reaches of the Cascades. Their site in the foothills above Snoqualmie is not far from work. The house, designed by Johnston Architects PLLC and built by Tall Tree Construction, accommodates both professional and practical demands, but it also fulfills a deep desire to do what is right.

The Schell Wheeler house will soon receive a LEED Silver certification. Blow-down trees from storms provided the logs that were milled into siding, fascias and trim. A ground source heat pump, supplemented by solar water preheating supplies energy to the house. Other strategies are implemented throughout the house, but the overall character of the two buildings complete the goal of sustainability: the complex is extremely livable within its environment. Even on a grey and rainy day this forest retreat is filled with light.

Mt. Baker Residence of Neighborhood Seattle by Johnston Architects PLLC

Here is Mt. Baker house of neighborhood Seattle, was built as a speculative project and was the first house in a planned development of five houses. The area is a veritable catalog of the styles that have influenced Seattle residential architecture for 100 years, with many classic craftsman houses in the mix. The neighborhood accommodates all of these styles gracefully because of a shared sense of scale and relationship to the street.

The house as an infill project that respects those attributes and borrows from tradition while expressing a more modern aesthetic. The use of hardipanel, aluminum windows, steel and fir handrails, modern lighting and vivid colors bring the house unequivocally into the present, but the attention to detail, the expression of separate materials and the clarity of the construction reflect its traditional roots.

The original beveled siding slides from outside to inside marking the transition between old and new. The new portion is emphatically modern in its use of materials, structure and detail but the gable roof and areas of wood siding make it sympathetic to the character of the old house. The straightforward design direction was set by the need to economize and dictated the use of exposed truss-joist framing, simple forms, aluminum windows and sleek but modest finishes. Vivid paint colors and walls full of art enliven the rooms. This addition has allowed a busy family to work, entertain and live more efficiently and comfortably in a neighborhood they love. And the views aren’t bad either!

Shrub Tables From Chinese Designers by Zhili Liu

Chinese manufacturing is usually famous for large quantity, low quality and very limited new material and technology. So for Chinese designers, creating low quantity products with high quality in both design and manufacturing has always been a tougher task than it is in most other places. I have been trying to create high specification products with typical Chinese industrial materials and basic technics, through unusual design and engineering, and these tables are the first prototypes in this direction – which I believe could be another route for “Chinese design” aside from reinterpreting the traditional decorative elements.

Shrub Tables by Zhili Liu 07

The exposed sunken screws bolt together the table top with all the “branches” of table legs, forming dozens of stable triangles, which make the table top part of the frame to share the stress in the legs, thus material needed to make a table is minimized. the 2-metre dining table has a top with 6mm even thickness, from edge to centre, without any space technology or exotic material, just thin steel rods, aluminium sheet and a roadside workshop, and the randomnly spreaded fastening screws also become the decorative elements here. Cut, bent, welded and powder coated.
