The King Residence in Santa Monica , California by John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects

The King Residence is a 4,300 square foot single family residence located in the Sunset Park section of Santa Monica, a neighborhood originally developed to house workers from the World War II era McDonnell Douglas Airplane Factory. About one mile from the beach, the structure houses Matt and Erin King and their two children.

Situated on a gently sloping, wedge-shaped corner lot, the design rejects the standard public front yard/private backyard typology, opting instead for a structure whose living spaces and bedrooms open onto a relatively large exterior patio/garden/entryway that faces the public streets and surrounding houses.

Mews Family House by TAKA Architects

This are TAKA Architects have sent us photos of a mews house they’ve designed in Dublin, Ireland. The house was designed for a family that had recently moved out of their long-term family home and wanted their new home to maintain some sense of continuity with their former lives. The mews house was built in the rear garden of a renovated Victorian house where the parents live, and was built for one of their daughters to live in.

The Y House by SousaSantos Architects | The programmatic development

Portugal based SousaSantos Architects have sent us some photos of the Y House they designed.

This house is a vision device. A system that rules the way the inhabitant sees the outside world and simultaneously frames the way the outside sees the dwellers. The design of this object was focused on this theme. The big curved window is this statement vortex, it creates a visual path that, like a camera traveling, reveal the image of the landscape.

The programmatic development of the house reflects the classic bourgeois organization promoting the clear division of rest areas leisure areas and work areas. This division creates tree limbs that are united by this design morphing that develop the two big windows of the living room.

The idea of landscape as an image and its importance in the domestic living were the main design focus of this scheme.
